2010 St. Thomas Aquinas Boys Soccer
Trinity Game
The Saints traveled to Derryfield park in Manchester for
the first time to play Trinity High School.
Trinity High School is a new team to Division 2 so this
was the first time these two teams had met.
The Pioneers had a definite home field advantage playing
on the field at Derryfield park.
The players had to watch out for the ridge
where the softball infield cut into the pitch.
Trinity used this area well in
their first half defense.
The Saints started with Jeff
King and Jon Nartiff as strikers. Mike Fort, Ed Conroy,
Jon DiPietro and Dan Perreault in the midfield. Seldon Cook in net, David
Ham, Mike Kubiczki, TJ Tetreault, and Noah Schwaegerle on defense.
Saint Thomas worked well to control the ball, while the
Trinity defenders kept numbers back and sent long balls to their two forwards at
every opportunity. This quickly tested the Saints defense and made Cook
play out more to scoop up the long balls. Jon DeWolf, Jon Kisinis and
Peter Roginski all saw time helping out on defense under the quick counters.
Connor Bailey and Andrew Civiello also had to take turns dealing with the
softball infield as outside midfielders. The Saints had a number of
scoring chances in the first half, but the Pioneer keeper made a number of
diving outstretched saves that kept the game tied. The Trinity defense was
marking Nartif and Conroy every time they came into the offensive third.
Saint Thomas came out in
the second half having to attack on the uphill. The Saints were more
determined to capitalize on offense. Conroy was rotated between midfield
and striker to keep the Pioneer defenders off guard. Fort took a 20 yard
shot about 5 minutes in that just missed the top far corner and had the bench on
their feet. Conroy took the next attempt as he was nearing the 18 yard
line he was taken down from behind. Their was no call and he was cautioned
by the referee for voicing his displeasure.
At the 58 minute mark King
sent a great pass to Fort who quickly turned and fired it into the far side of
the net to put the Saints on the board.
St Thomas had an advantage in possession, but Trinity
quickly countered with long deadly attack runs every time they got a chance.
Seldon Cook had 8 saves to earn his fifth shut out in a row. Cook even saved a header from a last second corner kick by trinity that came off his own teammates head preventing an own goal.
