2010 St. Thomas Aquinas Boys Soccer

Sanborn Game 2

The Saints traveled to Chase Street park in Kingston to play Sanborn Regional High School.

The Saints started with the kick off and Seldon Cook started in Net.  The Defense was Jon Kiskinis, Mike Kubiczki, Noah Schwaegerle and David Ham.  The midfield was Nik Karamourtopoulos, Mike Fort, Ed Conroy, Jon DiPietro and Dan Perreault with Jeff King as the lone striker.

St. Thomas controlled the ball well and made great combination passes.  Immediate pressure was put on Sanborn.  Keeper Tristan Cooper came up big for Sanborn making a number of great saves right off.

At the Five minute mark Jon Nartiff entered at Striker.

The Saints were able to break through their defense at the 7:40 mark.  Conroy sent a ball through to Karamourtopoulos who beat Cooper for the early score.

At the 10 minute mark Jon DeWolf entered the game on Defense and Andrew Civiello and Conor Bailey went in at Midfield.

The Saints continued to control play even though Sanborn was able to counter quickly with long punts by Cooper.
The St. Thomas defense kept working hard to keep Sanborn off the scoreboard.

At the 30 minute mark Evan Surprenant entered at Striker and Sebastian Olsen went in at Midfield.

The half ended with the Saints up 1-0.  St. Thomas had 7 shots on goal to Sanborns 4.

In the Second half Sanborn took the kick and tried to send a long ball down the right side.  Kubiczki quickly sent the ball back up the field and the Saints were pressing again.

Conroy, Kiskinis, Ham, Fort, King and DiPietro all had shots on goal that Cooper was able to save.

At 65:50 St. Thomas was called for a foul in the box.  Sanborn was awarded a penalty kick and Jed Magnusson took the strike.  Cook came up with a great diving block save, but Magnusson was able to put in the rebound before the defense could get in and clear it away.  The score was now tied 1-1.

The Saints picked up the tempo and the game became more intense.  Sanborn dropped into a defensive mode playing for the tie.  St. Thomas pounded the box.  An apparent hand ball blocking a shot on goal went uncalled. A minute later another apparent hand ball in the box went uncalled.  St. Thomas was shooting at will but all the shots were being blocked or going just wide.  The goal kicks by Cooper were going over midfield, but the Saints Defense was quickly working the ball back to the attack.

The Clock was now stopped at 2:00 and the Saints were still pressing the attack.  Jeff King worked the ball into the box and took a shot at the net.  It was looking like it was the game winner when a Sanborn defender reached out and blocked the ball from going into the net.  Everyone looked at the referee who appeared to not be making the call, but he slowly put the whistle in his mouth and made the call for the foul.  No Caution was awarded for stopping an obvious goal scoring opportunity.  The Saints were awarded a penalty kick.  Karamourtopouls took the kick and scored the game winner with 30 second remaining.

Seldon Cook ended the game with 8 saves while the Saints put 16 shots on goal.

The Saints host Pelham tomorrow.
