Sanborn Regional

St. Thomas played host to the Sanborn Regional Indians today in a game that was moved from Friday so that our Girls soccer coach could take part in a family wedding.  The game was also a bit handicapped by the roofers blocking the scoreboard clock.

The Saints started with Seldon Cook in net, David Ham, Mike Kubiczki, TJ Tetreault, and Noah Schwaegerle on defense.   Mike Fort, Ed Conroy, Jon DiPietro and Dan Perreault in the midfield.  Jeff King and Jon Nartiff were the strikers.

St. Thomas worked the ball down into the Indians end but lost possession and Sanborn quickly countered.  They were able to put the first shot on goal of the game, but Cook came up with the save.  The Saints began to take control of the game with more passing.  They were able to possess the ball and change fields quickly.  The Indians worked to keep numbers behind the ball.

Jon DeWolf entered the game on defense and helped St. Thomas keep possession while changing fields to gain an attacking advantage.

 

At the 13:30 mark Conroy and Fort worked the ball up the midfield and sent a through ball to King.  He touched a nice pass over to Nartiff who sent it by the Sanborn keeper.

Nartiff scored what turned out to be his third game winning goal in a row. 

 

Connor Bailey and Andrew Civiello entered as outside midfielders.

Jon Kiskinis went in after Schwaegerle got is legs taken out on an offensive run.

At 28:50 Tetreault took a corner kick and Kiskinis fired it into the net to put the Saints up 2-0. 

 

Sebastian Olsen entered the game at midfield and added his hustle and speed to the control of play.

The score remained 2-0 at the half with great effort by the Sanborn keeper who stopped 8 shots and picked off a number of crosses into the box.  The St. Thomas defense only allowed 2 shots on Cook.

The second half saw a more determined possessive offense from the Saints.

Peter Roginski and DeWolf started as the outside fullbacks.  Both worked well to bring the ball up the sidelines and work it into the attack.

42:13 saw Fort send a great through ball that King ran onto and chipped over the Indians Keeper.  The saints were up 3-0.

 

43:29 Conroy send a nice pass splitting Sanborn defenders to Nartiff who buried it in stride for his second goal of the game. St. Thomas was now up 4-0.

DiPietro fired a long range chip from the 18 yard line that went over the out stretched hand of the keeper only to ping off the cross bar.

48:12 Ham carried the ball up from the back line and chipped it to Taylor who found the back of the net for his first varsity goal.  Saints were now up 5-0.

 

At 59:01 Civiello sent a pass into the midfield from the sideline allowing Conroy to blast home a goal and put St. Thomas up 6-0.

 

Camden Latimer, Evan Surprenant and JJ Brunelle all saw time on the forward line of the Saints attack.

 

Fort dropped back into defense and Ham was moved to the forward line.  At 8:33 Ham took a cross from Tetreault and headed it into the net for the final tally of the game.

 

St. Thomas ended up with 22 shots on goal.  While St. Thomas dominated on the scoreboard and with time of possession Sanborn was not without its attacks.  They were able to counter on numerous occasions.  In the final minutes they took a shot from 25-yards out that looked like it was going top right corner, but Cook was just able to punch over the crossbar to preserve his third shut-out.

 

St. Thomas (5-1) hosts Portsmouth (1-5-1) in a rematch of the season opener that the Saints carried 3-1.
