2010 St. Thomas Aquinas Boys Soccer
vs. Bishop Brady Giants
St. Thomas played the game in
memory of Nancy
Murray, a St. Thomas Hockey mom to a large number of
the Soccer players during the winter season. Players
wore black sweatbands
The Saints started the game controlling play from the kick off. Mike Fort and Eddie Conroy controlled play in the midfield sending balls out to Dan Perreault and Jonathan DiPietro who made great runs and sent numerous crosses into the Giants area. Jon Nartiff and Jeff King both had a number of scoring chances early.
Conroy played with a little extra for his friends mom.
The Bishop Brady Keeper, Connor Brown, worked very hard to keep his team in the game. Brown had 11 saves in the first half alone. and ended the game with a total of 21 saves.
Nartiff took a hard shot that rebounded off the keeper at the 9 minute mark. Then running in to follow up his shot buried the rebound for the eventual game winning goal. His second in as many games.
At the 14 minute mark Conroy took a direct kick that was punched away by the Giants keeper and King ran on to the rebound and sent it into the net to put the Saints up 2-0.
The Defense of Noah Schwaegerle, Mike Kubiczki, TJ Tetreault, Jonathan DeWolf and David Ham stood strong in front of Seldon Cook. The Giants did manage 4 shots on goal in the first half. Jonathan Kiskinis and Sebastian Olsen worked well subbing into the center midfield spots. Connor Bailey and Andrew Civiello made some great runs on the outside midfield. Mike Dupont, Peter Roginski and Cam Latimer added to the Saints attack at forward.
The score at halftime was St. Thomas 2 - Bishop Brady 0
The Saints came out in the second half determined to keep adding to the tally.
Kiskinis started in the defense for Schwaegerle and worked well in joining the attack from the back.
At the 52 minute mark Conroy brought the ball in towards the left post drawing the Giants keeper over, then sent a ball across the middle of the box to a charging Bailey who banged it home for the third goal of the day.
The Saints continued to pepper the Brady keeper. JJ Brunelle, Tapley Taylor and Evan Surprenant all added to the St. Thomas attack.
At the 54 minute mark Fort sent a beautiful through ball to King who slipped between the Giant defenders and beat the charging keeper to make it 4-0.
Seldon Cook made 8 saves and even faced down a penalty kick to earn his second shut-out.
The Saints host Sanborn tomorrow. While it has been over 10 years since these two teams have played each other, Sanborn had knocked the Saints out of the play-offs in their last meeting.
